Số lượng dịch vụ của Windows Vista rất nhiều, lên đến 130, trong khi Windows XP SP2 chỉ có 78. Việc tắt bớt các dịch vụ không dùng tới sẽ giúp Windows Vista khởi động nhanh hơn và hoạt động “nhẹ nhàng” hơn do dung lượng bộ nhớ được giảm đáng kể. Muốn vậy, cần phải biết rõ những dịch vụ nào có thể hay không thể tắt, hoặc có thể tắt trong những điều kiện nào.
1. Các dịch vụ không nên tắt:

3. Các dịch vụ nên cân nhắc:
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service: nếu không sử dụng chức năng Automatic Update của Windows hoặc Microsoft File Transfer Manager thì Disable.
- Certificate Propagation: nếu bạn có dùng smart card thì thiết lập Enable.
- Fax: có thể thiết lập Disable nếu bạn không gửi fax từ máy tính.
- Print Spooler: nếu bạn không có máy in có thể thiết lập Disable.
- Smart Card, Smart Card Removal Policy: nếu không có thiết bị đọc smart card, thiết lập Disable.
- Telephony: nếu không sử dụng modem, fax thì thiết lập Disable.
- Windows Image Acquisition (WIA): chỉ thiết lập Enable nếu có kết nối với máy scan hay camera.
- Windows Media Center Extender Service, Windows Media Center Receiver Service, Windows Media Center Scheduler Service, Windows Media Center Service Launcher, Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service: nếu không sử dụng các dịch vụ từ Media Center của Windows Vista thì thiết lập Disable.
- WLAN AutoConfig: chỉ Enable nếu sử dụng mạng không dây.
